Some nutritionists have criticized the term “nutrient dense,” which they say is used to describe a nutrient that’s more concentrated in the form of a complex or complexed food or beverage than a simple meal or meal component.
“That’s an easy way to call something a nutrient dense food,” says Steven J. Green, a professor of nutrition at Cornell University.
“It doesn’t tell you how much it is, because it’s not the amount of protein or fat.”3.

“We don’t know whether low- and no-fat diets are helpful in this, but I do know that low fat diets are not going to make you thin,” says Green.5.

Many foods contain lots of calories, such in a food as a hamburger or a cheeseburger, but they can be packed with a lot of other nutrients.
A lot of studies have also shown that the most nutritious food is a salad, which contains as much as three times as many calories as a normal-sized plate of vegetables.
“I don’t think we should say this is more nutrient dense than a normal meal, but it’s probably not the same as a sandwich,” Green says.6.
Which Foods Have the Highest Nutrient Content?
Some foods are rich in nutrients that are important for human health, such a fiber-rich diet rich in nuts, seeds and beans, or a diet rich with whole grains and legumes.
“A lot of people think that nuts and leguminous vegetables are nutritionally important, but you can’t tell if they are by looking at the amount they contain,” Green adds.7.

Many processed foods come with preservatives and other additives, which can make food more difficult to digest and therefore increase the risk for stomach upset.
“Processed foods can have a negative impact on your health because they can have the opposite effect on your body’s ability to absorb nutrients,” Green explains.8.

Some fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants and other compounds that can boost the health of your body.
Some vegetables, such green and leafy vegetables, contain compounds that help boost the immune system.
Other vegetables, like sweet potatoes, contain vitamin C and lycopene, antioxidants that may help protect the body from free radicals and inflammation.
But some fruits and veggies, such cucumbers, are higher in antioxidants and lymphedronins, which are antioxidants that have been shown to increase the body’s energy metabolism.9.

Many healthy foods are high in vitamins and minerals, which may help you to get healthy, but some foods are more nutritious and healthy than others, Green says, including those rich in antioxidants.
“If you eat a lot or lots of fruits, you are likely to get more of the antioxidants you need,” Green notes.
“You may get more vitamin C, for example, or lympedronin.”10.

It’s hard to predict what a plant will be healthier than another, says Green, but he adds that some plant species are more likely to be good sources of nutrients.
“Some plants are healthier, because they are easier to digest, and some are better for the environment,” Green said.11.
